Konstfack brings interiors to the agenda at the Venice Architecture Biennale

Konstfack is part of the opening programme in the Nordic pavilion with the ambition to bring interiors to the agenda of the world’s most prominent arena for contemporary architecture. INTERIORS MATTER! is a roundtable event, organised by Rochus Hinkel and Ulrika Karlsson from Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm in collaboration with the exhibition of the Nordic Pavilion, In TherapyNordic Countries Face to Face.

“Interiors” are gaining new momentum and attention, while their definition is being expanded and re-investigated in projects, experiments and theories. Participants will discuss what defines an interior; what the interior’s relationship to architecture is; how the notion of interiors has been developed, and shifted, in recent studies and what its relationship to the contemporary city is; as well as the construction of landscapes.

INTERIORS MATTER! is built upon a recent series of symposia held at Konstfack, which explored the manifold notions of interiors, ranging from interiors and their materialization, to interiors and their relationships to cities and societies, to interiors and their politics, ecologies and economies, to interiors and their histories and imaginations, to interior atmospheres. In short, INTERIORS MATTER! argues for the relevance of interiors and disseminates their role in contemporary society.

Participants in the roundtable discussion are: Florencia Pita & Jackie Hah Bloom (Pita and Bloom, Los Angeles), Michael Meredith & Hillery Sample (MOS Architects, New York), Daniel Johansson (Byggfenomen, Stockholm), Bolle Tham and Martin Videgård (Tham & Videgård Arkitekter, Stockholm).

Organizers and Moderators:

Rochus Hinkel, Senior Lecturer in Interior Architecture and Furniture Design at Konstfack, Stockholm, principal of Urban Interior and curatorial editor of Art Architecture Design Research (AADR).

Ulrika Karlsson, Professor of Interior Architecture and Furniture Design at Konstfack, Professor of Architecture at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm and principal of Servo.
