Loulou Cherinet Appointed Professor of Fine Art at Konstfack

The artist Loulou Cherinet will start her new position as Professor of Fine Art at Konstfack on 15 August 2015.The appointment is for ten years and what she brings with her, to Sweden's largest university college of arts, crafts and design, is significant experience from her own artistic practice and exhibiting around the world.

Since 1996 she has divided her time between Addis Ababa in Ethiopia and Stockholm, the cities where she lives and works. These cities are also where she was educated, at The Addis Ababa University School of Fine Art & Design and the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm.

Cherinet works with moving images in spatial representations and installations which set the scene for dialogue and storytelling in various ways. She often uses film-making in the post-documentary tradition in order to examine how abstract terms and politics penetrates our bodies, the objects that surrounds us and behavioural patterns.

- Materiality is a broad term with new meanings and interesting multidisciplinary subdivisions in contemporary art. I look forward to meeting the students and learning more about the experiences that emerge by/from/through a work of art. My work will also focus on transcending the Eurocentric perspective that permeates our currently fictitious internationalised art scene, says Loulou Cherinet.

- I am so very pleased to be able to welcome Loulou Cherinet to Konstfack. She's a fantastic artist who works with issues of identity and relationships between people in a narrative form where there is a place for both humour and poetry. She has a large international network of contacts and extensive experience of working in different types of collaborative projects. This is a perfect fit for Konstfack, concludes Konstfack's Vice-Chancellor, Maria Lantz.
