Christian Blex appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra

The German conductor Christian Blex has been appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra (MSO) for the 2026/2027–2028/2029 seasons. This year, Blex won the prestigious Herbert von Karajan Young Conductors Award 2025 and has, since 2022, served as assistant to Kirill Petrenko at the Berliner Philharmoniker after winning the Siemens Conductors Scholarship.

- Christian Blex is an exceptionally gifted young conductor, and there was love at ‘first sight’ between him and MSO, says Erik Mikael Karlsson, CEO and Artistic Director of Malmö Live Concert Hall & Malmö Symphony Orchestra. I’m looking forward with great anticipation to working with him in the coming seasons, and I’m confident that both Christian and MSO will continue to grow artistically through our collaborations, creating outstanding concerts for our audience.

Christian has a profile that perfectly fits our Chief Conductor Martyn Brabbins and our Honorary Guest Conductor Rainer Honeck. Together, the three form an extraordinarily dynamic and highly skilled artistic trio, Karlsson continues.

Christian Blex conducted the Malmö Symphony Orchestra for the first time on 25 September in the concert Kodály and Tchaikovsky.

- When I arrived in Malmö I immediately felt welcomed and embraced by this wonderful orchestra and was elated when they wanted us to collaborate more and offered me the role of principal guest conductor, says Christian Blex. I’m looking forward to first and foremost some wonderful music-making and risk-taking as well as the orchestra and I challenging ourselves with interesting repertoire and projects.
