NIRA Dynamics Becomes the World's First Vehicle Data Provider to Achieve AiRAP Accreditation, Advancing Evidence-Based Road Safety
LINKÖPING, SWEDEN — 2026-06-22 — NIRA Dynamics, a global leader in connected vehicle software, has become the first vehicle data provider in the world to achieve AiRAP Accreditation from the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP). The accreditation validates that NIRA's road safety data, derived in real time from millions of connected vehicles meets the stringent quality standards required to support iRAP's globally recognized road risk assessments and Star Rating models.
The accreditation formally recognizes NIRA Dynamics’ capability to provide validated, scalable data for six critical road attributes: road condition, skid resistance, vehicle flow (AADT), operating speed (mean and 85th percentile), and speed limits. These are the data inputs that determine how dangerous a road is, and where investment is needed most to prevent deaths and serious injuries.
For road authorities and safety planners, this represents a fundamental shift in how road risk data can be collected and used. Rather than relying on periodic physical surveys or expensive sensor infrastructure, NIRA's software continuously captures road safety data from vehicles already on the road — delivering a dynamic, network-wide picture of road risk, updated in real time, at scale, and at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods.
"We are proud to partner with iRAP and accelerate their vision of a world free of high-risk roads," said Lisa Åbom, CEO of NIRA Dynamics. "By combining our connected vehicle data with iRAP’s globally recognized risk models, we are equipping road authorities with the insights needed to prioritize maintenance, optimize infrastructure investments, and ultimately save lives. This is a critical step in making roads that cars can read, enhancing the driving experience for everyone."
Central to NIRA's road safety capability is its Road Surface Conditions (RSC) product, which monitors real-time changes in road grip and surface state across entire road networks. Data on skid resistance — one of the most direct indicators of accident risk — is collected continuously and at scale, providing the kind of dynamic, evidence-based input that iRAP's Star Rating models require to accurately reflect real-world road danger.
The accreditation directly strengthens iRAP's global road safety assessment capabilities, especially in markets where traditional survey data is scarce, outdated, or prohibitively expensive to collect.
"High-quality, scalable data is critical to improving road safety performance globally," said James Bradford, Global Technical Director of iRAP. "The AiRAP Accreditation of NIRA Dynamics demonstrates the growing role of vehicle-based technologies in supporting infrastructure safety assessment and evidence-based investment decisions. This marks an important milestone for the AiRAP initiative, with NIRA becoming the first accredited vehicle data supplier. By integrating NIRA’s real-world road condition and speed data into our Star Rating and risk mapping tools, we can accelerate the identification and prioritization of life-saving infrastructure improvements."
With AiRAP Accreditation, NIRA Dynamics joins a growing community of certified data providers working toward Vision Zero — the global ambition to eliminate road fatalities entirely.

About iRAP
The International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) is a registered charity with the vision for a world free of high-risk roads. The charity works with governments, development banks, mobility clubs, industry, research organizations, and road safety NGOs to provide them with the free methodology, tools, training, and support to make their roads safer. iRAP’s Star Rating Methodology provides a simple and objective measure of the level of safety built into the road for vehicle occupants, motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians. As of December 2025, iRAP partners have assessed the safety of 2.2 million kilometers of roads and designs in 140 countries, informing the safety of US$120 billion of road infrastructure investments. Informed by the iRAP methodology, road safety infrastructure changes and safer speeds have prevented 860,000 deaths and serious in. Read more at irap.org
