NIRA Dynamics wins Swedish Department of Transportation public tender for and create safer winter roads in Sweden
NIRA Dynamics have developed a new solution to continuously monitor the road surface of Swedish roads. The solution will improve winter road safety and make winter road maintenance more efficient. In 2018, the Swedish Department of Transportation (Trafikverket) take huge leaps in modernizing how information about the winter road surface is collected, going from rare point measurements using special vehicles to continuous measurements with regular passenger vehicles using software from NIRA Dynamics.
Over the next two winters, NIRA’s software will be used to evaluate the performance of road contractors’ winter maintenance efforts with the purpose to create safer roads. A number of keay areas in Stockholm, Gothenburg and a few other cities will be in focus. Collection of data will be fully automated and can give live updates on the road friction in a way that has never been seen before.
”The Nordic road authorities are setting a new standard for how existing vehicles can be used to create a detailed picture of the roads. This will be a benchmark on how other countries will monitor their winter roads.” says Johan Hägg – Head of Marketing & Communication at NIRA Dynamics.
The source of data is initially taxi vehicles and rental cars where NIRA Dynamics have multi-year cooperations for data collection. Starting 2020, NIRA will start collecting road data using series produced vehicle, where NIRA have signed deals with world-leading car manufacturers. The launch of RSI will make a European rollout possible, and greatly increase traffic safety. Millions of vehicles will be contributing to this new level of detail.
The service is being rolled out in other countries. Norway’s Department of Transportation (Statens Vegvesen) is already evaluating the solution, but more countries and partners are lined up. “The future is very bright! RSI cuts winter maintenance costs, decreases the environmental impact and increases traffic safety. Win-win-Win!” says Predrag Pucar, CEO at NIRA Dynamics.
