Construction Industry

Construction is really making the most of the wide variety of properties that nonwoven has to offer. Being inorganic, durable and strong are some of nonwoven's most valued properties within construction. 

Nonwoven is used in floors as a stabilizer or sound dampener. It’s used in walls as stabilizer, moisture barrier, vapor barrier and waterproofing. Also roofing products are benefiting from nonwoven properties as a backing, stabilizer or barrier for moist and water. Spunbond and fiberglass in particular are commonly used in construction products.

Beds & Furniture Industry

Manufacturers of bed and furniture often use nonwovens such as spunbond and needle punched felt to dampen sounds for a more luxurious feel. It is also used to protect the products interior by wrapping the springs in padded furniture or beds. Nonwoven is used as a cost-effective alternative to fabrics for parts of the products that are not visible to the eye.

Hygiene Industry

The hygiene industry has really taken nonwoven to its heart. You find it in most diapers and sanitary napkins. This since several nonwoven materials are really soft and works very well in products with close contact to skin. The way in which the material interacts with moisture and liquids is very important to the hygiene industry – the material can be designed to either absorb liquids or to allow it to pass through.

A growing market is also the use of disposable nonwoven cover sheets in SPA and massage facilities. It’s a much more comfortable and luxurious feel to lay down om a bed covered with fabric-like nonwoven than on a bed with rustling paper.

Automotive Industry

The automotive industry is using needle punched felt to easily mold stable interior components such as ceilings, interior walls and luggage compartments. The molded components are often then coated with other materials such as leather or fabrics. Softer nonwovens such as spunbond or softer needle punched felt are used in the car seats.

The industry also uses fiberglass to mold long-lasting interior and exterior components to boats.

Healthcare and medical Industry

Healthcare and medical products are all about minimizing health hazards and eliminating the risk of spreading bacteria and viruses. Nonwoven disposable products such as bed covers, curtains and face masks are making health institutions and hospitals more hygienic. Today patients are also offered disposable soft nonwoven clothes in elastic spunbond. Urine bags are coated in soft skin-friendly nonwoven.

But also, medical supplies are benefiting from nonwovens as it is used in wound absorbents. And medical instruments are wrapped in nonwoven for the sterilization process.

Filtration

Nonwoven is used in many different types of filters – both air and liquid filtration. In many filter products it is used as a stabilizer – that ensure that the filter media itself will stay stable over time. But nonwoven is also used for the filtration process itself. It of often needle punched felt and spunbond that are used in the filter industry.

Absorbents

Nonwoven is often used as backing/stabilizer in absorbent products that are used to keep moisture-sensitive products and food fresh and odor free. Coated spunbond is optimal due to properties that allow moisture to pass through but block liquids. Nonwoven is also used to absorb oil and liquids.

Food industry

The food industry is adopting nonwoven for packing – often as a more durable alternative to paper. Especially teabags and coffee filters are among the most common applications.

And as mentioned earlier, nonwoven is also used in absorbent to keep food fresh and odor free.
