Nordbex paves the way for carbon negative power generation in Sweden

Over the past few years, Nordbex, a Swedish environmental technology company, has been quietly working to address two of Sweden’s major challenges: electricity shortage and challenging climate goals. Today, the company announces that they are ready to launch plans for carbon negative electricity production in Sweden.

This innovative method, known as bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), combines biomass from forest waste with advanced carbon capture technology. By using biomass for energy production and simultaneously capturing and permanently storing the generated carbon dioxide underground, Nordbex enables the creation of baseload power that can supply a small city while making the city completely carbon-negative.

This historic project is being carried out in collaboration with some of the world’s most prominent companies in environmental technology, including Aker Solutions and Aker Carbon Capture.

The first project that Nordbex proudly launches will be in the municipality of Nybro. The choice of Nybro is due to the optimal location with local forestry, good rail transport options, and the municipality’s high ambitions in sustainability and their commitment to proving leadership in this area.

Tobias Fagergårdh, chairman of the municipal board in Nybro, comments on the initiative:

“We welcome Nordbex to Nybro, their significant investment means a great deal. The establishment means not only new jobs, but their new technology will also contribute new energy and be of great help in achieving the goal of becoming a carbon negative municipality. Nybro aims to be a leading municipality in sustainability efforts, so Nordbex’s investment in the municipality is very welcome.”

Carbon negative electricity production in Nybro is expected to become a reality before 2030, and it could then become Sweden’s and perhaps the world’s first carbon-negative municipality.

The rapidly increasing energy usage and ambitious climate goals are a challenging equation, but with this solution, Nordbex can address both problems simultaneously. Nybro municipality has understood from our initial conversations how groundbreaking this solution is, and their desire to be a leader in sustainability is strong. This is not only a great opportunity for Nybro and Sweden but also a milestone for the company, the entire industry, and an important step towards a more sustainable future, says Thomas Öström, CEO of Nordbex.
