Swedish edtech start-up to revolutionize education in emerging countries

Swedish edtech start-up to revolutionize education in emerging countries.

There are more than 1 billion children and youth in primary and secondary school age in emerging countries. This number is bound to almost double by 2050. Of these an estimated 250 million children cannot read, write, or even demonstrate basic arithmetic skills.

Swedish edtech start-up, Edoo Education (“Edoo”) has set its sight on addressing this global issue by giving “universal access to sustainable, inclusive basic quality education”. After 2 years of challenging field testing in rural areas of Africa, Edoo is now ready for global expansion. In January this year, Edoo signed a long-term agreement with Myanmar Ministry of Education to modernize the country’s entire primary and secondary education by the introduction of digital and mobile education solutions. The agreement is signed for a period of 10 + 10 years with a potential reach of 10 million students and 500,000 teachers.

“The agreement is the result of a long fruitful discussion and close collaboration with the Myanmar Ministry of Education” John Strandberg, Founder and CEO, explains. “The strong support from the Swedish Embassy and Business Sweden has been instrumental in finally reaching this agreement.”

“Social inclusion, in line with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal for Education, is a key priority of Myanmar. Edoo’s focus on this area support the values we emphasize in the collaboration between our countries” explains Johan Hallenborg, Head of the Swedish Embassy’s Section Office in Yangon.

During H.E. State Counsellor of Myanmar, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, state visit to Sweden in June 2017, Edoo was invited alongside three of the largest companies in Sweden, to meet with the State Counsellor and to represent the Swedish private sector.

“Universal access to sustainable inclusive basic quality education is fundamental to the development of nations and global social inclusion. We want to help achieve this by combining global educational goals and national social targets with financial and sustainable returns. During our field testing we could see what tremendous impact our solution could have in short time on student and teachers, and with more than 1 billion potential users worldwide, we see a tremendous opportunity for growth. We are already in discussions to expand our solution to countries in Africa, Middle East and South East Asia”, John Strandberg points out.

“Edoo is a great example of the growth we’re seeing in the Swedish edtech sector, and of a social enterprise able to also fulfil financial sustainability. It’s been an interesting journey in Myanmar, and we’re looking forward to work together with Edoo in their continued international growth” says Vivianne Gillman, Manager of the Mekong region at Business Sweden.

Being a fully self-funded start-up until today, Edoo is now looking for partnerships with foundations, private CSRs and social impact investment groups to fund its global expansion.
