Swedish consortium secures major contract despite covid-19 challenges

Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) awarded the Norrköping based Swedish Project Management Consultant Independent Business Group (IBG) together with a Swedish consortium of companies, a contract that will realize the State of Qatar’s Flight Information Region (FIR) Project. The project will increase airspace capacity at both Hamad and Doha international airports while meeting the continued expansion of Qatar Airways Group and the FIFA world cup 2022 requirements. The QCAA will invest in new state of the art operational practices, systems and standards within the Air Traffic domain.

IBG offers an approach to the Qatar FIR project that addresses not only the short-term operational efficiency gains but also develop long-term capabilities through a Centre of Excellence, which will cement Qatar as a world-class location for Air Traffic and Aviation expertise.

“I am happy that IBG and the Swedish consortium have been the entrusted with the important task of supporting Qatar to increase its air traffic capacity and its ambition to become a world leader in the domain of air traffic management. I hope we will build a long-term relationship with Qatar which goes beyond the project period itself” stated Kim Silander, CEO of IBG.

IBG has already been present and active in Qatar for over three years. This contract is the fruit of good performance and added value in previous contracts and the strong support received from the Government of Sweden, the Embassy of Sweden in Doha and the Swedish Trade & Invest Council (Business Sweden).

“In this project Swedish aviation industry will offer state of the art technologies and operational methodologies for optimal air traffic management while reducing environmental impact and CO2 emissions. The project will also create new high technology jobs both in Qatar and Sweden” added Ulf Rudebark, Senior Advisor for Aviation and Safety, at Business Sweden.

A very exciting part of the project is the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in Doha, focusing on research, innovation and sustainable aviation.

“I am pleased that QCAA has awarded a Swedish consortium the task of developing a state-of-the-art solution for Qatar to increase its air traffic capacity and air traffic management. The project will give Qatar the tools to become a leader in air traffic management” said HE Anders Bengtcén, Ambassador of Sweden to the state of Qatar.
