Abdi drinks a cup of milk ,five months after recovering from SAM, at their home, Ethiopia
Here, Abdi is pictured five months after we first met him.
In late June 2019, he had been sick on and off for two months, and then started deteriorating fast. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was admitted to the emergency room and was diagnosed with Severe Acute Malnutrition and anaemia. He could barely breathe and had to get a feeding tube in his nose.
The next day, Abdi was transferred to the special children’s ward, which is supported by Save the Children.
Thankfully, Abdi recovered much quicker than expected and on 4 July, exactly a week after he was admitted, he was discharged from the hospital. He was also referred to the Outpatient Therapeutic Programme supported by Save the Children, where he had checkups and was provided with high energy therapeutic food (peanut paste).
We returned to meet Abdi in their home in a small village five months later, in December 2019, when he was happy, playful and healthy.
