Skellefteå Municipality comments on Lyten’s completion of the purchase of the battery factory in Skellefteå

Today, February 27, Lyten announced that it has completed the purchase of Northvolt’s Swedish assets. Work to restart the battery factory will now begin. It has also been confirmed that EdgeConneX will establish a data center on the factory site in close collaboration with Lyten. This means yet another large‑scale establishment in Skellefteå.

- This is very positive and welcome news. Lyten will now begin battery production in Skellefteå. We also welcome EdgeConneX, whose investment further strengthens Skellefteå as a hub for innovation and digital development. In recent years we have had to be flexible and adapt to changing circumstances, which also means we are well prepared for the developments now ahead, says Lorents Burman (S), Chair of the Municipal Executive Committee.

Lyten also announces that an industrial cluster will be formed in the area through the establishment of a data center by EdgeConneX, which is owned by EQT. This means two large‑scale establishments in Skellefteå. This development continues to support the green transition and Skellefteå Municipality will continue working to support and create good conditions for companies to establish and operate here.

In its recently published battery strategy, the EU has identified batteries as a strategic product for Europe’s competitiveness, and work is underway at the European level to create strong conditions for the entire value chain. Skellefteå enables Sweden to take a significant position in this effort and contribute to a strong and resilient battery value chain, including suppliers, research, and talent, says Kristina Sundin Jonsson, Head of Administration, Skellefteå municipality.
