Getting Transboundary Water Right: Theory and Practice for Effective Cooperation

SIWI introduced a new report developed to serve as a primer on transboundary water management: Getting Transboundary Water Right: Theory and Practice for Effective Cooperation.

Produced with support from The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), the report challenges the international water community to integrate new conceptual thinking in the field with lessons learned from transboundary water basins around the world. Edited by Dr. Anders Jägerskog, Programme Director, SIWI and Dr. Mark Zeitoun, Senior Lecturer, University of East Anglia, it features contributions from:

  • Mr. David Grey, Senior Water Advisor (Africa and South Asia), The World Bank, New Delhi
  • Dr. Claudia Sadoff, Lead Economist (South Asia), The World Bank, Kathmandu
  • Dr. Genevieve Connors, Water Specialist (South Asia), The World Bank, New Delhi
  • Mr. Jakob Granit, Programme Director, SIWI
  • Dr. Marius Claassen, Manager, Water Resources, The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in South Africa
  • Mr.Munqeth Mehyar, Chair Person and Jordanian Director, Ecopeace/Friends of the Earth Middle East (FoEME)
  • Mr. Nader Khateeb, Palestinian Director, FoEME
  • Mr. Gidon Bromberg, Israeli Director, FoEME

"Stakeholders in transboundary basins face a choice between cooperation to gain mutual benefit from their shared water resources or just competing for simple access and volume," said Anders Berntell, Executive Director of the Stockholm International Water Institute. "We believe that this report helps make a strong case for cooperation and collaboration. The contributors bring extensive real-world experience in transboundary waters that can help those stakeholders make the case themselves within their own countries."
