Infraröd – Circus you can hear

Infraröd is a circus and sound experience directed by Jay Gilligan and performed by the second year students of the Bachelor Programme in Circus.

A unique collaboration with Jesper Nordin, Infraröd incorporates his prize-winning invention "Gestrument" to turn exceptional circus skills into expressive melodies. Infrared is an ensemble piece, with each actor an instrument and distinct voice blending to make a live symphony. In addition to being a captivating experience for both eye and ear the audio gives the audience a deeper understanding and appreciation of the timing and physical requirements that circus demands.

Infrared uses motion capture technology to play music with physical actions. A single footstep turns into a musical note. Correspondingly, more complex movements produce much more advanced compositions. These sounds highlight parts of the action that are never seen or noticed, small details that all the disciplines are based upon. The music reveals hidden layers in the circus language.

Infrared is an innovative circus performance of high artistic level as well as a research project and an experiment to capture what is exclusive about circus in live performance. Though infrared light is not visible to the naked eye, here it exposes circus in both sight and sound.
Teeterboard, juggling, aerial acrobatics, tight wire, Chinese pole and other spectacular circus feats are brought to the audience with an innovative and contemporary approach that is unique to the circus education at DOCH and now Internationally acclaimed.

About the Bachelor Programme in Circus
The Bachelor Programme in Circus at DOCH uses the skills and the artistic traditions as a foundation on which to build high level technical and artistic competences in new practices. It offers knowledge about, and an understanding of the many forms of expression in circus. Upon graduating, the student can use her/his artistry to contribute to the development of the circus movement vocabulary and in turn may even redefine the art form itself.

Our students and their visions will challenge the present and change the world
