Globala trender och Patientsäkerhet i Plastikkirurgi
Near 2000 plastic surgeons from 100 countries met at Istanbul last week at the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) 26th World Congress. The scientific program included lectures from more than 400 international renowned speakers in 8 parallel sessions, 10 live surgeries and a focus on patient’s safety in the most popular surgical procedures such as breast augmentation, liposuction and eyelid surgery. The non-surgical part of the program addressed rejuvenation procedures such as Botulinum Toxin and Hyaluronic Acid.
According to the latest ISAPS Global Survey, breast augmentation is the most popular procedure in plastic surgery, with 1.6 million procedures performed worldwide, 57% of them on 19-34 years old women. It is followed by liposuction and eyelid surgery, both of them at the top of the ranking in number of procedures, both for men and women.
Lina Triana, the new ISAPS President 2022-2024 after the congress said, “as surgeons, we are here to inspire and nurture excellence in aesthetic education worldwide for the safety of our patients in times where medical procedures abroad are getting popular specially in Turkey where are world congress it taking place this year.”
Regulation and safety guidelines differ from place to place and information should be available for patients regarding the specifics for each country. ISAPS safety pillars relay on who performs the procedures, that has the training, knowledge and experience, that where the procedure is done has all the safety standards that are required for that country, that the patients is suitable for the procedure and that the surgical plan is ideal for this individual”.
From a Swedish point of view, the new legaslitive system launched June 1, 2021 have dramatically increased patient safety issues to only allow educated surgeons to do aesthetic procedures within their speciality, Patients do have the right to know that their doctor has adequate plastic surgery education and training.
Furthermore at yearly meetings the Swedish Society of Arsthetic Platic Surgery (SFEP.se) continously update guidelines for aesthetic procedures.
The congress also included a sculpture course as plastic surgeons are sculptures of the human body, a woman’s symposium based on leadership in diversity because ISAPS aims to be global, and a residents’ symposium where the future of the specialty lies. ISAPS will have its next scientific congress in Athens (Greece) 2023 and in 2024 Cartagena (Colombia).
