Announcing the Ung Svensk Form 2022 scholarship recipients

The exhibition Ung Svensk Form 2022 opens today, 7 February, in Galleri 3 at Kulturhuset Stadsteatern in Stockholm. Every year, Svensk Form receives hundreds of applications of which each one exceeds the next. And every year, our panel of judges do a sterling job in selecting the final winners.

– Ung Svensk Form rewards visionary and free artistic exploration, and most importantly the courage to believe in an idea and put every cent into realising it. For many, the exhibition is the bridge that connects education and reality – a meeting place for striking up new conversations and making new contacts, says Karin Wiberg, project manager of Ung Svensk Form.

This year’s Ung Svensk Form scholarship recipients
In addition to the travelling exhibition, a number of scholarships are also awarded every year as part of the competition. Ung Svensk Form 2022 features a total of seven scholarships, and today we are announcing the winning projects.

Swedish Wood – Travel Scholarship
This year we are proud to present Swedish Wood as the newest partner in Ung Svensk Form. They are stepping into the project with a travel scholarship that aims to raise knowledge of how wood contributes to a sustainable development from a social, environmental and economic perspective. With the motto “knowledge is the key to making wise decisions”, they have chosen the following winners of this year’s journey – from plant to finished product.

Andreas Berggren – Pop
Elsa Unnegård – VED
Hans Ola Sjöberg and Victor Ågren – Wooden it be nice
Ingrid Segring Björklund – Fireplace
Klara Knutsson – Ornament
Matilda Hunyadi – Ornamental Obsessions - Gingerbread Goes Digital
MISC. Studio – Break

– These projects show not only proof of skilful interpretation of wood as a material, but also the expressions, techniques and processes yielded when we place knowledge in the hands of young designers – our future, says Björn Nordin, head of architecture and design at Swedish Wood.

Arvet – Travel scholarship
This year, Arvet have reformulated their existing scholarship to establish a completely new travel scheme with the aim to provide insight into Arvet’s global exchange of knowledge on climate and architecture. This exchange includes the social responsibility of architecture as well as a fundamental understanding of the renewable material that is wood. Arvet’s travel scholarship 2022 goes to Joséphine Rapp Thomas for her project Att höra till.

– We look forward to bringing together Josephine and her profound lines of thought with places in need of change. Together we will find new ways to protect and include the origin and social culture of a place and build lasting solutions for the future, for the climate as well as society, says Sandra Falk, co-founder and head of marketing of Arvet’s Global Movement.

IKEA – Work scholarship
Not only are IKEA part of the Ung Svensk Form jury, but they are also offering one winner a work scholarship at IKEA of Sweden. The work scholarship runs for a full five months and includes salary and accommodations in Älmhult. IKEA’s work scholarship 2022 goes to Matilda Hunyadi for her project Ornamental Obsessions – Snickarglädje goes digital.

– By mixing new manufacturing techniques with clear historic references, this year’s winner of the IKEA scholarship has created a new and interesting expression. Ornamental Obsessions is a wonderful reflection of our present, as well as our past and our heritage, says Eva Lilja Löwenhielm design manager at IKEA of Sweden.

Kvadrat – Exhibition scholarship
Kvadrat have put a lot of effort into high-performance alternatives to textile design and interiors. Their scholarship includes materials, a cash sum and the chance to hold a high-quality exhibition in Kvadrat’s showroom in Stockholm. The winner of Kvadrat’s scholarship 2022 is Gergely Kovacs with his project /kju:b/ (cube).

– Kju:b immediately caught our attention. The modular structure not only exudes artistic and architectural quality, but it also sparks playful interaction and a curiosity to understand its fundamental construction, says Kristoffer Magnusson Wahl, country manager at Kvadrat.

Lammhults Möbel – Exhibition scholarship
Lammhults Möbel place great value on a production that is based on a circular approach with an end result designed for longevity and reusability. Lammhult’s scholarship provides the winner with materials, a cash sum and the chance to hold an exhibition in Lammhult’s showroom in Stockholm. The winner of Lammhult’s scholarship 2022 is Gustav Winsth with his project DIO.

– We immediately fell for the DIO shelf because its innovative and inspiring process is in line with our design philosophy. Innovative, modern, playful and sustainable are all words that we believe are very important in our product development efforts. In DIO, we see an expressive design and an interesting marriage of materials – complete with a climate smart approach, says Åsa van Drumpt, CEO of Lammhults Möbel.

Massive Entertainment – Work scholarship
For the second year running, Massive Entertainment are awarding a winner their work scholarship. The scholarship includes a six-month paid internship as “Concept Artist” to design clothes, accessories and skins in game production at Massive Entertainment in Malmö. The winner of Massive Entertainment’s scholarship is Hanna Linnea Ryd with her project Grandmother of Cats – Dressed Drunk.

– Hanna’s brilliant collection serves up innovation and a large portion of playfulness. Her talent for playing with objects and her ability to put objects in a new light is both surprising and entertaining, says Petter Sydow, producer at Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora at Massive Entertainment.

The Swedish Tannery Association – Study trip
The Swedish Tannery Association have invited all entrants in Ung Svensk Form 2022, as well as some Ung Svensk Form applicants to a study and workshop trip to one of Sweden’s four tanneries. The tannery visit will offer a chance to apply for two 3–5 day work scholarships with a value of SEK 20,000 each.

– In the production of leather, there are many interesting waste products whose areas of use have yet to be explored. The winners we choose will show the ability to take initiative and have a creative approach to broaden the use of leather and hides, including the waste products that arise in the production of the raw material, says Torbjörn Lundin, vice chairman and co-founder of the Swedish Tannery Association.
