Kvinnorörelsen välkomnar förbud mot sexköp utomlands

Pressmeddelande   •   Dec 07, 2017 10:14 CET

- The Swedish Model of abolishing commercial sexual abuse is founded on the human rights principle of the innate dignity, value and worth of the human person. Myself and over a dozen other women with experience of being commercially sexually violated in prostitution work tirelessly across our nine nations to bring the Swedish Model to our countries, and we are immensely gladdened to see that Sweden may now be about to insist that its men have no more right to pay to abuse women on foreign soil than on their own, säger Rachel Moran, grundare av SPACE International, en internationell organisation för överlevare från prostitution.

- This decision demonstrates again Sweden's leadership and consistency in the fight against prostitution and its exploitation. With this law, Sweden does not aim only at offering a more equal society for Swedes but increases its efforts towards a world free from prostitution. Extending the prohibition of the purchase of sex for its own citizens abroad is a concrete contribution to the decrease of exploitation in third countries and a direct invitation to harmonise legislations towards the universal abolition of the prostitution system, säger Grégoire Théry, generalsekreterare Coalition Against Prostitution, en paraplyorganisation för NGOs som stödjer kvinnor i prostitution i 18 länder.

- We would like to congratulate the Swedish government on presenting a Bill to criminalise sex purchase abroad, as it takes the issue of the sexual exploitation of the prostitution to a new level, with Sweden again providing the lead. The Swedish law on prostitution has been an inspiration to Embrace Dignity, säger Jeremy Routledge, Deputy Director, Embrace Dignity, Sydafrika.

- The Asian Women Coalition Ending Prostitution sends a message of deep appreciation for the solidarity that Sweden extends to Asian women and other women of colour around the world through this law. The victory achieved by Swedish feminists gives governments around the world a progressive alternative approach to fight back the male demand for sexualized racist experiences of power over women.

- Very heartwarming news from Sweden. Congratulations for this big achievement. May it spread to the rest of the world, säger Ghada Jabbour, chef för Exploitation & Trafficking in Women Unit, KAFA, Lebanon

- Ruhama warmly welcomes this important initiative by Sweden. As a frontline organisation supporting women exploited in the Irish sex trade who come from all across the globe, we recognise the important message that this law will send. To criminalise the purchase of sex by its own citizens in third countries tells those marginalised women and girls being bought and sold that their value is equal to any woman, any girl, no matter where in the world they are, säger Sarah Benson, CEO, Ruhama

- We live in a world where predators travel, often easily. This law recognizes the facts that men travel for work and buy sex while away from home, and also that they travel in order to buy sex, and that they may consider it more acceptable to buy a woman who is defined as “other," or ethnically different from himself. This new Swedish law reflects Sweden’s recognition that we are a small planet, and that women everywhere matter. Thank you for inspiring the rest of us in difficult times, Melissa Farley, en av världens främsta forskare om prostitution och människohandel.
