Peace and Security by Veterans - 42 million stories

Peace veterans are in a meeting in Stockholm to discuss peace and security. The summit was opened on Tuesday night by H.R.H. Prince Carl Philip of Sweden. The aim of the “Peace and Security Summit” is to find ways of strengthening not only the veterans’ health and integration but also to contribute to a safer world.

-  No one who has been part of a war says it is glamorous. In Stockholm they share their experiences, Brigadier Ibrahim Hamid from Malaysia, president for the World Veterans Federation, says.

42 million veterans in 93 countries are organised in the federation and they all have a story to tell. In Stockholm 150 veterans meet, some previous enemies in wars. Russian soldiers meet Georgians, Israelis meet Palestinians, once in hatred, now friends.

The World Veterans Federations aim is to defend the wellbeing of the veterans, the victims of war and their families. At the moment research centres dealing with health issues are to be launched in Malaysia, Kuwait and The Netherlands. More are to come.

-  We also want to do our part to maintain international peace, by demanding that United Nations statues about human rights are respected, Brigadier Hamid says.

The federation acts as a meeting place for peace veterans. The idea is that "a hug is better than a fist stroke". The Swedish Veterans Federation, acts through 21 units. In those units the veterans find friends with similar experiences. In case they need, they are offered support, but the main reason for their being part of the veterans community is simply friendship.

The whole summit will be broadcast via Bambuser >>
