TCS partners with If P&C Insurance to successfully transition core mainframe applications

Stockholm, 25 March, 2015: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a leading IT services, consulting and business solutions organization, today announced the successful transitioning of maintenance and development of If’s mainframe based business critical insurance applications in Norway and Finland. If had selected TCS as a part of its strategy to invest in operational efficiencies and to focus efforts on strategic customer engagement and digital technologies to maintain market leadership.

“We were very satisfied with TCS during the transition,” says Lars Karlsson, Business Area CIO at If. “TCS brought to the table significant insurance domain competence, Nordic market knowledge, and extensive tools and methodologies to enable a seamless transition. They were also able to create extensive documentation and operational handbooks of the mainframe applications in scope.”

Through the partnership, If P&C Insurance has been able to leverage TCS’ strong Nordic insurance domain expertise built up over the past years. Moreover, as a part of the transformation project, several mainframe specialists transitioned to TCS, further strengthening the firm’s Nordic mainframe capabilities. TCS’ expertise in the area brings together 200 mainframe specialists, with the ability to scale operations, at a short notice, by tapping into a global network of over 25,000 mainframe experts at TCS.

Mainframe is used to run supremely critical business applications for organizations, especially in the financial services sector. Nevertheless, many people currently supporting mainframe systems are approaching retirement, leaving an unsustainable skills gap as a large part of the workforce entering the market wants to work on the latest technologies.

“To respond to the growing need, we have set up a Nordic Mainframe Competency Center, the capabilities of which were deployed in the collaboration with If,” says Amit Bajaj, Head of TCS, Northern Europe. “We see our Nordic customers demanding that vendors have the scale and capability to ensure certainty in delivery. Therefore, we are heavily investing in mainframe innovation and local expertise.”
