Press release -
Zpark and Einride conclude second-life battery project with final demo in Luleå
This week, Zpark Energy Systems, Einride, Chalmers University of Technology, and RISE will gather at Zpark’s R&D facility in Luleå to conclude their joint research project on sustainable energy storage.
Since 2022, the project has explored how second-life batteries from electric vehicles can be reused as stationary energy storage systems for charging heavy electric trucks. The goal has been to develop circular business models and technical solutions that reduce strain on the power grid while improving the cost-efficiency of electrified transport systems.
During this week’s final demo, the partners will present results and insights from the collaboration and showcase the R&D prototype developed within the project demonstrating how reusing EV batteries can provide efficient, sustainable energy storage for transport applications.
The project also highlights how combining energy storage, battery reuse, and smart charging infrastructure can play a key role in building a more circular and electrified transport system.
-The project has given us a deeper understanding of how second-life batteries can be used in practical applications to relieve pressure on the power grid and make charging of heavy vehicles more efficient. It’s an important step toward more sustainable and circular energy solutions, Jimmy Abrahamsson says, CEO of Zpark Energy Systems.
The demonstration marks the conclusion of the multi-year collaboration and will bring together representatives from all partners to jointly evaluate the results and discuss next steps for future applications.
About the project
The project is funded by FFI (Strategic Vehicle Research and Innovation) a collaboration between Vinnova, the Swedish Energy Agency, and the Swedish Transport Administration, together with the Swedish automotive industry. It is conducted by Zpark Energy Systems in collaboration with Einride, Chalmers University of Technology, and RISE. The aim is to develop sustainable and circular energy storage solutions based on the reuse of electric vehicle batteries, with a focus on enabling the electrification of future heavy transport.
