What happens in a boat crash at 20 knots?
Never before has Testfakta conducted a crash test with a boat. On assignment by the Norwegian Maritime Authority, the Norwegian Coastal Administration and the Norwegian Sea Rescue Society, we crashed a leisure boat at the RISE Research Institutes of Sweden’s crash test site in Borås. The results were scary.
The test was executed at a speed of 20 knots, a speed that is reached by most Swedish leisure boats. At the sudden stop at this speed (37 km/h) the crash test dummies were exposed to forces corresponding to 12 times their own weight.
The dummies used were meant to simulate a family of four, with a weight of 70 kg, respectively 35 kg. With the help of high-speed cameras, you get a brutal glimpse of the forces at play in the simulation. All dummies are propelled out of the boat.
- I am less surprised by the drama we witness at 20 knots. What I am really scared about is that many ride their boat much faster than that, says Klaus Hahn, CEO at Testfakta.
