New Lisbon airport to be built in Alcochete

Lisbon’s new airport is going to be built at Alcochete, according to plans announced by the Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates. This is great news for buyers at Troiaresort, as it means that the new airport will be a short 25 minute drive from the resort, which is currently being developed by Sonae Turismo. The new airport is expected to cost approximately €4.9 billion, and is situated on the south side of the Tagus river, 11.7 miles from Lisbon. Another site, at Ota, was originally earmarked for the new airport, but after studies the LNEC civil engineering laboratory concluded the airport could be built at Alcochete or at Ota and, according to the Prime Minister, Alcochete would provide more advantages. Speaking at a press conference held on January 10th, Jose Socrates said, “Alcochete is the best option, both technically and financially…and beat Ota on four of the seven crucial criteria’”, which were safety, natural resource sustainability, economic and social development, and financial evaluation. When the new airport opens in 2012, access to Troiaresort will become even easier, being only 25 minutes from the resort by road. Troiaresort is a 440-hectare development, encompassing the existing Robert Trent Jones 18-hole golf course. A range of residences are being built, including 211 beach apartments, 79 marina apartments and 98 private villas, along with two five-star hotels, two four-star aparthotels, a 184-berth marina, a casino, a conference centre, a beach club, a country club, a tennis centre and an equestrian centre. Due to careful master planning, all of the apartments have water views, while the villas have views of the ocean, the lakes or the golf course. Flights to Lisbon from London and regional airports in the UK currently run on a daily basis. Flight times are around two hours and forty minutes, and airlines include British Airways, easyJet, TAP and BMI Baby.
