Twingly launches BlogRank - the top-100 blogs in 12 languages

European blog search engine Twingly is today launching the Twingly BlogRank, a scale from 1 to 10 showing how popular a blog is. Simultaneously, the top 100 most popular blogs in a number of languages are presented. The top blogs on the English language top 100 list is TechCrunch followed by BoingBoing and Gizmodo.

The Twingly BlogRank is a way to compare how popular a blog is based on attention from other blogs and from the readers of the blog.

"By ranking blogs this way, we are hoping for an increased blog awareness around Europe", said Martin Källström, CEO of Twingly. "If you are lacking experience in the blogosphere, it can still be difficult to find good quality blogs. Consequently our top 100 lists can serve as a starting point for new blog readers."

The Twingly BlogRank and the top 100 lists are generated automatically by Twingly's blog search engine. The precise algorithm has not been published. The emphasis is on how the bloggers pay attention to each other by linking and how popular the blog is by its readers.

"Among other things we are analyzing the link structure between the different blogs, so I guess you can could call this the blogosphere's grades on themselves", said Martin Källström. "Hopefully our top 100 lists might be a fun incentive for some bloggers."

Twingly is a European blog search engine with a spam free index covering one million active blogs. Each blog gets a BlogRank, where the most popular blog in each language gets the value 10, and blogs where Twingly cannot measure any attention from other blogs, gets the value 1. If you would like to find out the BlogRank of your own blog, there is a badge to be downloaded on the blog's profile page on Twingly.com. The badge can then be added to your blog.
