Young Swedish media lab picks up order from Middle Eastern telecom giant Cyberia
Swedish film enthusiasts VionLabs test-drove their platform with Warner Brothers and Tele2/Comviq and user feedback was very positive. Renting and watching movies from Vionlabs smartphone app, instead of a traditional online VOD-service increase views with 4800 per cent.
Now it is time for a roll out in the Middle East together with Cyberia.
In the music industry we have seen services like iTunes and Spotify change the way we listen to music. Still, in the movie and TV business nothing has really changed. The new players don’t show any black figures, and the old ones have difficulties keeping up with the changing user behaviour.
– There’s a lot of activity right now, with players like Netflix and HBO. But show me anyone in this field that earns money, and I promise to eat my smart phone, says Rudolf Castillo, Co-Founder and Head of Business Development at VionLabs.
The reason they don’t make money is the complicated payment solutions and because they don’t see how new user behaviour and smart phones have transformed the category. All according to Rudolf:
– We created this Social Mobile TV app because we love movies and TV-shows, and we believe that if you offer a greater experience than piracy, people are willing to pay. Just like with music.
In 2012 VionLabs created a proof of concept together with Warner Brothers and Tele2/Comviq to fully test the user experience. In 30 days the viewing and video revenues increased, and the revenues were 4 times higher than what one of Sweden’s most popular VOD-services turns over in a year.
Put differently, by creating a better user experience and making it accessible on smart phones the amount of paying viewers increased by 4800 per cent.
The Swedish tech company is starting to attract interest from carriers all over the world. And As by Friday the 22nd of March Telecom giant IPS Cyberia with 40 million customers in the Middle East started to offer this service to their customers in Lebanon.
