Announcement: Championing a Fair Green Transition – Presenting the Winners of the 2024 WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award

The prestigious WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award, with a prize sum of 1 million SEK, is bestowed this year upon the international labour organisation, Just Transition Centre, for their pioneering efforts in ensuring workers' inclusion in the green transition process. Additionally, the WIN WIN Youth Award is conferred upon Norway's Natur og Ungdom for their collaborative endeavours with workers from the oil industry.

As the effects of climate change grow increasingly palpable, global leaders emphasise the imperative of a robust climate transition necessitating large-scale societal changes. It is crucial that this transition is inclusive and fair, without disproportionately affecting any groups.

The 2024 theme, "Inclusive Transition", has garnered record-high engagement, with the jury evaluating a total of 430 nominations worldwide.

Established in Gothenburg almost 25 years ago, the WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award recognizes and promotes outstanding solutions to the most urgent challenges facing the world today. Since 2018, the WIN WIN Youth Award has also celebrated the sustainability initiatives of young leaders. Today, the jury, comprising representatives from business, public sector, and academia, proudly presents this year's winners.

– We are deeply honoured to acknowledge the remarkable accomplishments of this year's recipients, who exemplify the necessity of cross-border dialogue and collaboration. They are true trailblazers, challenging preconceptions and advocating for solutions that benefit us all, says Sara Larsson, Executive Director of the WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award.

Winner of the WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award 2024: Just Transition Centre
The winner of the 2024 WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award is the Just Transition Centre, an international organisation founded in 2016 by the International Trade Union Confederation. Their mission is clear: to ensure workers actively participate in shaping the green transition. Despite limited resources, the Just Transition Centre provides knowledge, funding, and facilitates dialogue between workers, unions, employers, companies, and societal actors, identifying solutions that benefit both people and the environment.

Co-directors Diana Junquera Curiel and Giulia Laganá will attend the award ceremony in Gothenburg on 18th October.

– It is an honour to join a cohort of trailblazing pioneers and leaders in the struggle for a sustainable future for people and planet. The JTC strives to ensure that workers, their unions, and their communities are at the heart of efforts to transform our economies and societies to tackle the climate crisis, say Diana Junquera Curiel and Giulia Laganá.

Winner of the WIN WIN Youth Award 2024: Natur og Ungdom
Natur og Ungdom, the largest environmental and climate organisation for young people in Norway with over 5,300 members, is the recipient of the 2024 WIN WIN Youth Award, accompanied by a prize sum of 50,000 SEK.

In the spring of 2023, Natur og Ungdom and workers in the Norwegian oil industry presented "The Ten Commandments for Green Industry," outlining principles for an inclusive, rapid, and sustainable industrial transition that benefits workers, society, and nature globally.

– We are in a short period of time to undergo a much-needed green transition, and there is no time for polarization. I am thankful for the WIN WIN Youth Award and hope to see more collaborations like this all over the world. After all, we all work for the same cause – a safe future, says Gytis Blaževičius, leader of Natur og Ungdom.
