Singapore Changi Airport handled 3.82 million passenger movements in September 2011, an increase of 12.5% over the same month last year. Aircraft movements grew in tandem, increasing 16.4% to 25,500 movements during the month.
For the first nine months of the year, Changi Airport handled 34.2 million passenger movements, a year-on-year increase of 11.3%. Traffic on low-cost carriers, accounting for a quarter of the total at Changi, increased 26.0%, while traffic on full-service carriers grew 7.1% during the same period. Aircraft movements increased 13.8% during the nine months, with Changi Airport handling 221,900 flights.
Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia have been the major contributors to passenger traffic growth at Changi Airport year-to-date. However, the sustainability of this growth may be impacted by weaker travel demand to and from Europe and the United States as a result of increasing economic uncertainty in these regions.
Changi Airport handled 154,400 tonnes of cargo in September, an increase of 2.2% year-on-year. For the nine months, airfreight movements amounted to 1.38 million tonnes, representing a growth of 2.5% over the corresponding period last year.
As at 1 October 2011, Changi Airport is connected to some 210 cities in 60 countries and territories, and serves 100 airlines operating more than 5,900 weekly flights.

Awards Update – Changi Airport was voted “Best Airport in the World” for the 24th consecutive year by readers of Business Traveller (UK) in September. Changi has also received the Centre for Aviation’s (CAPA) “International Airport of the Year 2011” accolade this month. Changi Airport has garnered more than 380 accolades since it opened in 1981.
New Services – SilkAir launched thrice-weekly services to Koh Samui, a popular island resort in Thailand, on 27 September 2011. And on 11 October 2011, it commenced thrice-weekly services to Bandung, the capital of Indonesia’s West Java province. The frequency will be increased to five times weekly from 30 October 2011.
Change of Terminal – With effect from 30 October 2011, SriLankan Airlines will move its operations from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3. It currently operates 22 weekly flights to and from Colombo, including 11 fights each week between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
New Outlets – Visitors to Terminal 2 now have a wider selection of dining options with the opening of Souperlicious at Terminal 2’s Departure Hall. The outlet offers soups, salads and sandwiches prepared fresh on-the-spot and served in a fast-food concept style. Discover Singapore, focusing on Singapore-themed souvenirs such as the Merlion and favourite local delicacies, now has a second shop in Terminal 1’s Departure Transit Lounge. American Express has opened concierge service counters at the Arrival Halls of Terminals 2 and 3 to provide on-the-spot solutions to its customers such as replacement of lost credit cards.
