How Eco Friendly Is Your Wood Flooring?

Wood flooring has been increasingly popular among high end architectural construction and luxury interior design. It is consider as a green and healthy building material as it has natural properties that makes your surrounding environment cleaner.

Consumers, whether they are looking for indoor or outdoor wood, should buy wood floor that are verified by credible assessor such as FSC.

There are thousands of wood species in today's market. Each have its unique texture, color and character. Some timber has already gone low in its worldwide supply to the verge of extinction and yet global illegal logging have further agonized the problem. This came into question whether the wood flooring supplier is concerned about the environment and the well being of its clients' or simply just focus on their profits.

As recommended in a report by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), wood flooring buyers should always look for responsible contractors who distribute wood products with globally recognised and credible sustainable label such as Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Having a FSC certified timber product gives proof that the manufacturer of the particular wood flooring has been using timber from well managed forestry and not from any suspected resources. The buyer can ask the vendor for any proof of documentation such as their FSC certification.

Illegal logging is still rampant today endangering and risking the extinction of many popular wood species. One common wood species that is used widely on outdoor decking projects and indoor solid wood flooring projects in Southeast Asia countries such as Singapore is Merbau.

Reports from EIA and Greenpeace International, two renowned green movement non-profit organisations, have indicated the seriousness on the business of illegal logging of merbau timber worldwide. The consumer may need to be equipped with the knowledge and understand the importance of buying wood flooring products which are produced and approved by FSC.

Wood flooring is a luxury. Pleasing to the eye, it enhances the green quality aspect and healthy living at the home. However, the property owner may have go a step further especially during selection of the wood flooring material and contractor to determine Eco wood products and whether the timber products are produced and managed from credible resources such as FSC.
