What Type Of Flooring Is Safe For The Elderly People?

In Singapore, we are facing with aging population whereby the population of our elderly is much more as compared to the adult and children population. Normally, elderly people would prefer to stay put in their existing home as moving of home could be a hassle for them and they are already used to the living environment at their area. It needs to be a safe place for them to live in as they would be spending most of their time relaxing in their own homes watching television or reading newspapers.

What are some of the factors that they have to consider when they intend to do renovations for their existing homes?

Wood Materials

When it comes to flooring, they would prefer to go for wooden flooring so that their feet would not feel cold when they are stepping on it during rainy weathers. In this way, they do not have to wear slippers to walk around in their homes. It can also create cosy atmosphere for their homes and allow them to feel comfortable.

Slip Resistant

It would be better for them to choose their flooring with a high level of slip resistant and preferably with some cushioning effects such as good quality laminate flooring or high end resilient flooring (HERF) as they are not glued to the ground to reduce the impact of their fall should accidents occur.

Low Maintenance

If they are living alone in their homes, doing of house chore tasks would be tedious for them. Flooring that requires low or zero maintenance could help to ease their workload and allow their homes to retain their original beauty without the need to take extra care and maintenance.

They would need to invest in good quality flooring to last them for a long period of time and to reduce their worries of maintaining and repairing their floor.
