Royal Visit in Singapore

Singapore 31 August 2012 - St James Palace confirmed today that Their Royal Highnesses - The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be staying at Raffles Hotel during their visit to Singapore, which is undertaken on behalf of the British Government in celebration of Her Majesty The Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Mr Pierre Jochem, General Manager, Raffles Hotel Singapore and Regional Vice President, Operations, Asia Pacific, Raffles Hotels & Resorts said: "We are delighted that Their Royal Highnesses, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be staying with us at Raffles Hotel, and that we are to play a small part in Her Majesty The Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Their visit is particularly exciting for us as it comes a week before our 125th anniversary celebrations. In 2006, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh honoured us by staying at Raffles Hotel during their State Visit to Singapore, so to now have the opportunity to welcome Their Royal Highnesses, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in this Jubilee and Olympic year, will be a very special pleasure for all of us at Raffles Hotel."

There are a few hotels in the world whose names have become virtually synonymous with the cities in which they are located - and none more so than Raffles in Singapore.

Named after Sir Stamford Raffles, founder of Singapore, Raffles Hotel opened in 1887 and soon became the haunt of intrepid travellers from around the world. Regular guests included Noel Coward, Joseph Conrad and Somerset Maugham, who described the hotel as embodying "all the fables of the exotic East." Through their stories, The Long Bar, the Palm Court and the Bar & Billiard Room with its tiger, became familiar to people who had never even been to Singapore.

Whilst preserving its atmospheric teak verandahs, gleaming white colonial façade and magnificent Gieves & Hawkes-clad doormen, Raffles is very much part of the modern, vibrant city of Singapore. It is now the proud flagship of the eight strong Raffles Hotels & Resorts.

Raffles Hotels & Resorts was formed in 1989 to restore, redevelop and manage the world-famous Raffles Hotel. This lays the foundation for Raffles Hotels & Resorts to become a world-class international hotel management company.

With a compelling mix of cultures and styles, every hotel in the Raffles family has its own individual personality, with its own story to tell and its own sense of place. However, each one is proud to draw on the original Raffles tradition of delivering thoughtful, personal and discreet service to well-travelled guests.

This philosophy is embodied in the Raffles symbol –The Traveller’s Palm. Legend tells that this spectacular tree was a welcome sight to travellers of old; water stored in the base of its leaves quenched their thirst and the orientation of the leaves in an East-West direction provided an informal compass to guide them.

Today’s guests find a modern interpretation the Traveller’s Palm in the pin worn by every employee of Raffles Hotels & Resorts – a potent reminder to both guests and staff of the spirit of hospitality and sanctuary that is alive and well at every Raffles hotel.
