SilkAir Touches Down in the Top End

SilkAir, the regional wing of Singapore Airlines, today launched its first flight to the vibrant and historic city of Darwin, capital of the Northern Territory in Australia's Top End. This new service gives customers the ideal opportunity to explore one of Lonely Planet's top ten must-visit cities in 2012.

The inaugural flight MI801 departed Singapore Changi Airport at 0755 hours and will land in Darwin at 1405 hours. The return flight, MI 802, will take off at 1510 hours and is expected to reach Singapore at 1810 hours (all times local). (The inaugural flights on 26 March were retimed to accommodate the welcoming ceremony requirements. Under the normal schedule, MI801 departs Singapore at 1930 hours and arrives in Darwin at 0145 hours on the following day. MI802 departs Darwin at 0230 hours and arrives in Singapore at 0530 hours.)

Darwin is SilkAir's first destination in Australia, increasing the number of destinations in SilkAir'ss route network to 39 in 12 countries. SilkAir will operate four times a week, departing Singapore on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, with next day return flights from Darwin. The services will be operated with Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft, both featuring business and economy class cabins.

To mark this special occasion, passengers on the first flight out of Singapore will be presented with a special gift from Darwin, a notebook covered in contemporary artwork by some of the Northern Territory'ss world renowned Aboriginal artists. Passengers travelling on the first flight out of Darwin will be served a celebratory drink and exclusively produced SilkAir notebooks.

The Regional Wing of Singapore Airlines

SilkAir’s pedigree as one of Asia-Pacific’s leading regional carriers began in the mid 1970s. Tradewinds Pte Ltd was formed in 1975 as the tours and travel arm of Singapore Airlines. Tasked with developing and wholesaling holiday tours, Tradewinds exclusively marketed SIA holiday packages in the early 1980s.

On 21 February 1989, Tradewinds the Airline was unveiled, catering to passengers holidaying in exotic destinations in the region, including Pattaya, Phuket, Hatyai, Kuantan and Tioman. As the carrier developed, regional business destinations such as Jakarta, Phnom Penh and Yangon were added.

On 01 April 1992, Tradewinds was renamed SilkAir. This change marked the carrier’s evolution from a holiday resort airline to a full-fledged regional carrier. The company’s Tours & Travel Division was restructured into a wholly-owned subsidiary of SilkAir, retaining the name Tradewinds Tours & Travels Pte Ltd.
