Design is in the detail with Sony 4K TV at Wallpaper* Handmade 2014

Sony is delighted to announce a major collaboration with Wallpaper* magazine during Salone del Mobile (8—13 April 2014), the world’s preeminent showcase of international design. Each year Wallpaper* commissions designers, makers and manufacturers to form one-of-a-kind items of furniture, fittings, fashion and food and more, for Wallpaper* Handmade, a much anticipated exhibition dedicated to the marriage of craftsmanship and design.

For Wallpaper* Handmade, Sony has created a series of three short films capturing Handmade designers in their studios and bringing to life the power of bespoke craft through revolutionary new Sony 4K technology.

Each film tells the story of a product, following the design process from studio to manufacturer, all captured with the stunning colour, detail and contrast possible only with Sony 4K. The subjects include New York-based designer Todd Bracher and Portugal cork producer Amorim; London artist and illustrator Ian Wright and the Geneva-based workshops of pencil manufacturer Caran d’Ache; and woven textile designers Wallace Sewell and Saville Row tailor Gieves & Hawkes.

Filmed in 4K with remarkable detail and clarity, and screened on the new Sony 85” X95 and 65” X9 4K Ultra HD BRAVIA TVs within the Wallpaper* Handmade space, the collaboration aims to enhance the visitor experience and create an engaging dialogue between the designer and the audience.

Phillip Rose, Director of Sony Design Centre Europe, says: “Design is in the detail so it seemed fitting to use cutting-edge Sony 4K technology to document and celebrate the creative process of this diverse and talented group of designers.”

“Certainly within Sony it is necessary from a technological and design perspective to cultivate a critical eye for the fine details. As beyond visionary and innovative concepts it is the little details that deserve attention and convey the amount of refinement, dialogue and meaning within the experience or finished piece. I believe that the amazing detail you can see in the Sony 4K films playing on the new X9 TVs powerfully reveals the creators spirit, like showing the fine detail of a painter’s brush stroke”

Wallpaper* Handmade is the first opportunity to experience the new 85” X95 and 65” X9 4K Ultra HD BRAVIA TVs from Sony before they become available to the public from May 2014. Sony 4K is a new technology developed to deliver four times the detail of HD, featuring eight million pixels and making the viewing experience much truer to life. The unique ‘Wedge’ structure of the X9 TV increases stability, allows simple cable connections and a larger speaker capacity to deliver richer, more powerful sound.

By redefining the conventional structure of the TV, Sony has created a narrower footprint. This not only gives the new X9 a bold, clean design aesthetic but from an interior design perspective, the new design offers the flexibility of standing the television on slimmer shelving units, allowing for a more honest integration into even the most minimalist domestic environments.
