The recovery in aviation continued in May, and summer travel is now picking up speed. In May, for the first time since the start of the Covid pandemic, Swedavia’s airports had more than 3 million passengers in a single month. That is an increase of 14 per cent compared to May last year and corresponds to 83 per cent of the pre-pandemic level.
Starting in July, Braathens Regional Airlines (BRA) will enhance its presence at Visby Airport with two new direct routes to Oslo and Århus. The routes will be served twice weekly until August 13 and are a welcome addition to the other traffic at the airport.
In March, more than 2.5 million passengers flew via Swedavia’s ten airports. That is an increase of more than 40 per cent compared to March 2022 and is equivalent to 77 per cent of the level before the Covid pandemic in 2019. The trend is driven by increased international travel, especially to Europe via Stockholm Arlanda and by the airlines’ continued investments in new traffic.

Travel at Swedavia’s airports increased, and Swedish connectivity improved significantly as a growing number of new routes were established.
Air travel in 2022 was characterised by a strong recovery in both air travel and Swedish connectivity, with a sharp increase in destinations from Swedavia’s airports. Despite a weak start to the year due to the Omicron variant and other global concerns, Swedavia welcomed nearly 28 million passengers in 2022 – an increase of more than 130 per cent – compared to nearly 12 million passengers in 2021.
The recovery in air travel continued in November. During the month, more than 2.3 million passengers in all flew via Swedavia’s ten airports. Demand is being driven by airlines’ continued investments in service, mainly via Stockholm Arlanda Airport, where international travel during the month approached pre-Covid levels.
To encourage companies and other organisations operating at Swedavia’s airports to become fossil-free and start refuelling with HVO, fossil-free diesel, on January 1 Swedavia introduced a special HVO 100 incentive at Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Göteborg Landvetter Airport. The goal is now for all operations at every Swedavia airport to be fossil-free by 2025.
In October, nearly 1.7 million passengers flew via Swedavia’s ten airports, half the number compared to October 2019, before the pandemic. However, the recovery in air travel accelerated during the month, when passenger volume reached its highest level since the start of the pandemic.

During the third quarter, traffic at Swedavia’s airports increased as countries have opened up and travel restrictions have been eased. Net revenue totalled 793 million Swedish kronor, more than 70 per cent higher compared to a year ago, and cash flow from operating activities, excluding State aid, was positive for the first time since the start of the pandemic.
On Friday, October 1, Visby Airport’s new charging infrastructure for electric aircraft will be inaugurated. The inauguration of the new electric aircraft charging stations is taking place in conjunction with the first electric aircraft also landing at the airport.
For the second straight year, Swedavia has invited a number of companies and other organisations to take part in a coordinated tender for sustainable aviation fuel in an effort to reduce fossil carbon dioxide emissions from its own air travel for business purposes.
