Panalpina recently chose the port of Duqm for the delivery of 3,600 extra-long gas pipes to Oman. As a newly developed port, it was less busy than others in the country which meant waiting times of vessel to berth were minimized. More importantly, the port had enough storage capacity for the 1,200 pipes per vessel while they were waiting to be delivered to the site of the gas field.
Gas pipeline pipes are normally 12 meters in length but these ones for a gas field in Oman were 18 meters long , each measuring 90 centimeters in diameter and weighing 8 tons. Special lifting equipment had to be designed for safe off-loading and loading. Specific beams that were brought in from India were required for the vessel discharge in Duqm.
