Eklund Foundation Announces 2019 Grant Recipients

The Eklund Foundation for Odontological Research and Education is pleased to announce the projects receiving this year’s grants amounting to approximately EUR 160,000.

The Eklund Foundation now supports odontological research projects for the fourth year running. Three projects within periodontology and implantology were chosen to receive this year’s grants of approximately EUR 160,000.

Joel Eklund, Chairman of the Board, Eklund Foundation, said, “These projects which will shed light on periodontal and peri-implant disease in relation to other diseases or conditions, and put the importance of good oral health in a larger context. The well-merited research groups represent a broad competence with regards to different specialities within odontology as well as through cross-disciplinary collaboration.”

The Eklund Foundation was created through a donation from the Eklund family, owners of TePe Oral Hygiene Products, in celebration of their long-standing relationship with the professional dental community.

The role of periodontal pocket microorganisms in the etiology of potentially malignant and malignant lesions of oral mucosa in patients with chronic periodontitis

Applicant: Ana Pucar, School of Dental Medicine, University of Belgrade, Serbia

Funding: EUR 47,920

“The potential consequences of periodontitis in the local environment should not be overlooked. This study will bring a deeper understanding of periodontitis as a risk factor for lesions of the oral mucosa.”

Metabolomic and proteomic profiling of peri-implant diseases

Applicant: Mario Romandini, Complutense University of Madrid, Spain

Funding: EUR 29,000

“Peri-implantitis is a well-known clinical challenge with regards to prevention, diagnostics, and treatment. Beside today's clinical studies, this study can contribute to the development of complementary tools to facilitate the assessment of the disease.”

Periodontal Inflammation and CerebrovAscular Disease (PICAD)

Applicant: Francesco D'Aiuto, UCL Eastman Dental Institute, United Kingdom

Funding: EUR 86,500

“The role of periodontal disease in relation to other diseases is a growing research field. The present study will further investigate the influence of periodontal disease on cerebrovascular disease, complications and new incidences of the disease.”
