DirectRooms.com – Phnom Penh sees Cambodians commemorate Victory Day on 7 January 2011
Taking place on 7th January 2011, Victory Day celebrates the fall of the four year reign of the regime run under the leadership of Pol Pot. In 1979 Cambodian troops joined forces with the Vietnamese army to enter the country and finally end the tyranny of the members of the Communist Party of Kampuchea, more famously known as the Khmer Rouge.
Pol Pot and his government were responsible for the deaths of more than two million people over the four years they were in power. The party believed in an independently sustainable country being able to provide for itself everything from food to medicine. As a result thousands of people were forced to go and work on farms and slave labour projects and in the process millions died from brutal treatment, disease and lack of food.
Victory Day is a time for people to commemorate those that lost their lives in the killing fields while at the same time recognising the battle that ended the evil reign. A mixture of commemorative services and celebrations can be seen by people staying in Phnom Penh hotels that are set to occur in different parts of the city.
Lek Boonlert, marketing head at DirectRooms.com commented: “People can experience difficulties finding accommodation in Phnom Penh during this busy time. Visitors should therefore go online to place early bookings to avoid any complications.”
