Sumo Group launches new leadership career programme

Sumo Group, one of the UK’s largest providers of end-to-end creative development and co-development services to the video games and entertainment industries, has launched a new free career programme aimed at helping experienced game developers from studios learn vital leadership skills – with sign-ups now open for a limited period.

Evolve is based on Sumo’s successful internal emerging talent programme and will provide fundamental leadership and management skills needed to help people take their next career step into leading others.

The programme will be delivered through a series of virtual workshops run by the Sumo Group Learning & Development team, as well as experienced Sumo developers in leadership positions. Evolve is open to people with five years of game development experience who don’t have access to learning and development opportunities.

“After a successful pilot programme, we’re excited to launch Sumo Group Evolve for those individuals who want to take their first step into a leadership role” said Jenny Muhlwa, Learning & Development Partner Consultant at Sumo Group.

“Leadership and management are among the skills shortage hotlist in the games industry and are the hardest roles to fill. Through Sumo Group Evolve we aim to help close the current skills gap of leads in the games industry and improve the pipeline of Talent coming through with more training opportunities at this level.”

Nadine Gutiérrez Pociño, Technical Artist at Innovamat and pilot student of Sumo Group Evolve said. “Sumo Group Evolve gave me the needed tools to keep growing by myself, being able to help others, and to better communicate in effective ways, making people more comfortable around me. As a game developer with little industry experience, this professional programme allowed me to improve my leadership skills and personal self-growth at an early stage.”

Sumo Group’s internal emerging leadership programme has been running since 2022 with over 100 people benefitting from the virtual workshops hosted by experienced leaders, helping them build towards becoming a leader in this thriving, competitive industry.

Sumo Group Evolve is a continuation of Sumo Group’s commitment to prioritising a culture of learning and personal development both internally and with the wider games industry. The business has previously hosted its own learning and development conference (SDC), as well as creating a talent development programme to create new pathways into the games industry for programmers and technical artists in the Sumo Digital Academy.
