MCM Birmingham: Gavin & Stacey star Mathew Horne teases upcoming Catherine Tate project and voice of Mario Charles Martinet reveals he's more like Luigi than Mario
Matthew Horne
Gavin & Stacey’s Mathew Horne appeared for a Live Stage spotlight session at MCM Birmingham Comic Con yesterday, during which he spoke about working with Catherine Tate on The Catherine Tate Show and revealed they’re now working together again. “Working with Catherine was phenomenal… I saw [her] last week. We are concocting something together for next Christmas.”
Mathew reflected upon working on Gavin and Stacey. “It doesn’t feel like just another part of my career at all - it feels like what has defined not only my career as an actor but also my entire life” He went on to say that it is “Beyond my wildest dreams to work on a show like that, it’s given me so much professionally but also personally in my life as well - I feel truly blessed to be part of it”.
During his panel, Mathew Horne expressed the importance of getting working class actors into acting. “I’m from a working-class background and I grew up in a two-up, two-down in Nottinghamshire. The opportunity to be an actor just wasn’t on the table… Something does need to change and voices need to be heard and more opportunities need to be had with working class people, but that will take a long, long time.”
Charles Martinet
Charles Martinet, the iconic voice of Super Mario, spoke to fans on the Live Stage as he talked about which characters he resonated most with: “I’m more Luigi than I am Mario. I’m a little more terrified than my brother - and I’m taller and run faster.”
When asked what Mario’s favourite adventure would be, Charles Martinet said: “Anything where he gets to wear a tanuki suit. Also, whenever I play Mario and I put him in the penguin suit I get hungry for sushi.”
He closed off the panel by saying “If invited, I will leap at the opportunity. The greatest joy in my life was doing Mario’s voice. So if they say “come do some Mario stuff with us”, I will always say “Wahoo!””
