Return to the Land of Light and Shadow in Magic: The Gathering Lorwyn Eclipsed
January 23, 2026 — Wizards of the Coast today launched Lorwyn Eclipsed, the latest set for the world-renowned trading card game, Magic: The Gathering (MTG). Cross the boundary into the eternal day of Lorwyn and brave the twisted landscape and wild Magic of Shadowmoor. Discover your true self under the perpetual moonlight of this dual-aspect plane.
Every light casts a shadow…
Welcome back to Lorwyn-Shadowmoor, the plane of light and shadow. Lorwyn-Shadowmoor was once a plane that would shift between its two aspects: Lorwyn, where the sun never fully sets, and Shadowmoor, where the moon cycles endlessly through a cool night. But much has changed in the years since our last visit. The two aspects of the plane began to bleed into one another, day into night and night into day.
Now, four first-year Strixhaven students, Abigale, Kirol, Tam, and Sanar, have stumbled through an Omenpath and found themselves in this strange new world. Ajani and Liliana are hot on their heels investigating their disappearance, as the conflict between Lorwyn and Shadowmoor escalates. Elemental forces clash, familiar faces emerge, and the fate of the plane hangs in the balance.
New and Returning MechanicsA return to Lorwyn-Shadowmoor for Magic: The Gathering brings new and old mechanics to the landscape, capturing the essence of the duality between both aspects of the plane.
These mechanics include:
- Vivid, an ability word that highlights abilities that care about the number of colours among permanents you control. Each vivid ability uses this number in a different way.
- Blight, a new keyword action utilising Lorwyn Eclipsed’s prominent feature of -1/-1 counters. One obvious use for them is to make opposing creatures weaker. One less-obvious use for them is to make your own creatures weaker. But why? One reason is blight, a new keyword action. There are many reasons to blight. It's often a cost you pay, such as to activate an ability or as an additional cost to cast a spell. While -1/-1 counters aren't great for your creatures, there are several ways in this set to remove them. These effects not only relieve the counters' power and toughness penalties, but the effects often have additional benefits as well.
- Changeling, a returning keyword that allows the card that has it to be every creature type. Creatures with changeling could be anyone or anything. It's a Human. It's a Goat. It's a Surrakar.
- Kindred, a returning card type that's added to noncreature cards to allow them to have creature types. For example, being a kindred allows Boggart Mischief to also be a Goblin. This means it's a Goblin card in your library, graveyard, and so on. So, if you search your library for a Goblin card, you can find Boggart Mischief.
- Double-faced cards, encapsulating the transformative nature of Lorwyn and Shadowmoor by revealing a different aspect of these characters on each face as they walk the different aspects of the plane. All of the double-faced cards in this set are nonmodal double-faced cards, previously known as transforming double-faced cards. This means that, unlike some double-faced cards, they have no mana costs on their back faces and when you cast them you can cast only their front faces.
Choose Between Light and Shadow
Each of Lorwyn Eclipsed’s two commander decks features a legendary commander tied to Lorwyn or Shadowmoor, giving you a new way to play Magic: The Gathering’s most popular format. Lead your forces with Ashling’s Dance of the Elements or Auntie Ool’s Blight Curse. Two legendary Commanders, two sides of Lorwyn’s duality. Embrace the power of harmony or harness the potential of blight at your next Commander night.
