Software defined radio market fuelled by the superior benefits of the technology

The software defined radio (SDR) market has been forecast to reach a value of US$36.9 billion by 2018, with the industry being predominantly fuelled by the superior benefits of the technology.

Furthermore, improvements in cost of product-development as well as time to market, ease of retrofitting or adapting products to evolving or new standards pertaining to air interface, and potential improvements in margins for OEMs are additional factors expected to drive growth in the SDR market.

A software-defined radio system is a radio communication system where components that have been typically implemented in hardware (e.g. mixers, filters, amplifiers, modulators/demodulators, detectors, etc) are instead implemented by means of software on a personal computer or embedded system. A basic SDR system may consist of a personal computer equipped with a sound card, or other analog-to-digital converter, preceded by some form of RF front end.

The technology is witnessing a rapid growth, as software-led radio communication systems are fast replacing the hardwired communication systems. The shift is being witnessed in several industries, with military, commercial and civilian industries at the forefront of this change.

The US represents the largest region within the global SDR market. The radio communications space in the country is witnessing a substantial growth in research and development, given the drive of the defence establishments to address the need of its personnel with respect to next generation tactical radios.
