Press release -
Business Travel with zero carbon emissions - The Deutsche Bahn Eco Programme
Business trips are now completely carbon-free: Deutsche Bahn has made it all possible with a new offer for corporate clients. For the energy consumed during a business trip, DB feeds the additional power obtained from regenerative source into the power network.
Corporate clients can now travel carbon-free by rail with a new offer from Deutsche Bahn. The power required for business trips is supplied entirely from renewable energy sources. The power is obtained entirely from regenerative energy resources in Germany. It is procured by DB subsidiary DB Energy and replaces power obtained from other sources. All corporate clients who are registered in the bahn.corporate programme can benefit from the new offer and completely eliminate carbon emissions in rail travel. Electric train services have the advantage that carbon emissions are eliminated from the start by the use of renewable energy sources. For this reason, DB has decided against carbon offset arrangements. Transferring to renewable energy sources comes at a small cost of around one euro for a return journey e.g. from Munich to Mannheim.
Environmental assessment for business trips
In addition there is an offer by DB that enables corporate clients to prepare an environmental assessment of their entire travel behaviour – at no cost, of course. The calculation is based on the client’s own data records. The total emissions and energy consumption are calculated for all the business trips completed. The result is a precise environmental assessment and a comparison between rail, car and air travel.
As a basic principle, transferring to rail travel will lead to a reduction in the environment impact: carbon emissions on DB’s long-distance train services, with an average payload per journey, are just one third of the emission levels produced by car travel (source: IFEU Institute). Compared with air travel, the performance is even better.
DB Eco Program
DB’s carbon-free offer for business travel is part of a new environmental campaign: DB is backing up its climate protection programme with the “DB Eco Program“. Compared with 2006 levels, DB is aiming to reduce its Group-wide specific carbon emission levels worldwide by 20 per cent by 2020. This includes all its land, sea and air services. On rail, DB has already reduced its carbon emissions by almost 40 per cent since 1990 based on transport performance. www.bahn.com/bahncorporate/en
