MFC Chicken & King Salami Announce Mega Merger to form Supergroup

Long-term Dirty Water Records bands King Salami and the Cumberland Three and MFC Chicken have announced their decision to merge into one “Supergroup” to be known as Chick King and the Cumberland Fried Chicken. While an unusual move, it is not unprecedented; in the words of MFC Chicken frontman Spencer Evoy, “We have all seen the runaway success of what McFly and Busted have done with their combined band McBusted and we think it will work for us too.”

For woodwind fans, it will mean a welcome return of the saxophone to King Salami’s catalogue of songs as well as the addition of a keyboard. King Salami himself commented, “While the sound of MFC Chicken’s frat rock is totally different from our hi-tempo ‘50s r&b, we are both party bands, as well as good friends, so we know this is going to work. And maybe now Spencer can write some double entendre songs about salami instead of always writing about chicken!” On a serious note, both bands have a small-but-eager fan base in North London’s nearby Hasidic Jewish community and feel a more “Kosher” name would increase their chances of penetration.

Both bands’ final individual performances will be at a private party on Sunday 1 May in London but touring plans for Chick King and the Cumberland Fried Chicken will be announced shortly.

The Dirty Water Club started in October 1996 in the Tufnell Park neighbourhood of north London, at a venue called The Boston. The club's name is derived from The Standells' 1966 hit 'Dirty Water' which glorifies the US city of Boston, Massachusetts.

Past performers have included The White Stripes (voted by Q Magazine as one of the top 10 gigs of all time, Mojo one of the top 30 and Kerrang one of the top 100!), The Gories, NOBUNNY, Kid Congo Powers (from the Cramps), The Fleshtones, Billy Childish, Radio Birdman, The Dirtbombs, Thee Michelle Gun Elephant, The 5.6.7.8's, The Horrors and The Brian Jonestown Massacre to name just a few. The club has also seen some original '60s performers, such as The Monks, ? and the Mysterians, Kim Fowley, Sky Saxon, GONN, Michael Davis of the MC5 and more grace its stage.

Their in-house record label, Dirty Water Records, is one of the leading garage/beat/(real) R&B labels in the world.
