Press release —
England and New Zealand share the spoils as rain plays a central role in Metro Bank ODI series
New Zealand Women 141-4 beat England Women 181-7 by 17 runs (DLS Method)
The Metro Bank ODI series honours were shared following a 17-run win for New Zealand in the final match of the series in Cardiff.
In what was Suzie Bates’ 184th and final ODI match for the White Ferns, her teammates ensured she signed off with the win that secured a 1-1 drawn series after Wednesday’s 2nd match was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
At Sophia Gardens, Bates was one of three early wickets for Lauren Bell who took 3-29, all falling lbw, as England tried to defend their total of 181-7 in 33 overs.
A delayed start by an hour due to yet more inclement weather in the series was followed by a lengthier downpour when England were 77-3 from 17 overs with Alice Capsey and Freya Kemp building a handy partnership.
Once the game restarted with the shortened overs in place, the duo continued to impress until Kemp fell for 20 looking to push the tempo with a big shot down the ground, before Capsey was next to go for a run-a-ball 45 taking the aggressive option.
Amy Jones’ quickfire 27 gave England the impetus they needed to take the total past 180, and New Zealand’s target was revised upwards to 184 due to the change in overs midway through the innings.
Bell’s fast start put England in the driving seat, but partnerships of 57 between Maddy Green and Brooke Halliday and an unbroken 44 between Halliday and Isabella Gaze was enough to put the visitors 17 runs ahead on DLS when the rain returned to end the contest for good.
