Timetables change on some Southern routes from 4 September

Press release -

Check before you travel ahead of localised changes to Southern timetables from 4 September

  • It is important that passengers check their journey planners for travel from Sunday 4 September
  • Frequencies will increase on several Southern routes, at busy times
  • To allow these improvements, services on some overlapping routes will be reduced, mostly at off-peak times when demand is low

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) will make a small set of timetable changes for some Southern routes from Sunday 4 September 2022. The new Autumn timetable will add 45 weekday train services overall.

There are no changes for most of the network. Nine routes, mainly in South London and the Brighton area, will see increased frequencies or additional stops. To achieve this, there are reductions on six overlapping routes that have alternative options, mainly to off-peak or Sunday schedules when customer demand is at its lowest. [All changes are detailed in Notes to editors below.]

There are no changes to Gatwick Express timetables.

It is important that passengers check their journeys at www.nationalrail.co.uk for travel on or after Sunday 4 September.

Southern’s Customer Services Director Chris Fowler said: “We’re pleased to be offering more services overall. Although most changes are small, it’s important that customers check their route for new times before they travel. The new timetables are available on the Southern website and journey planners have been updated.

“Of course, we’ll continue to monitor travel patterns and customer feedback, and to work with local stakeholders as we always do when timetables are introduced, so we can look to add more services in future when and where they’re needed.”

Southern

Brighton to Lewes

Weekdays

An additional hourly service will run between Brighton and Lewes during peak hours, calling at Brighton, London Road, Moulsecoomb, Falmer and Lewes.

Brighton to Hastings

In combination with the additional peak-time Brighton to Lewes services, Brighton to Hastings services will call additionally at London Road (Brighton) off-peak to improve connectivity in the Brighton area.

Brighton to Hove

Weekdays

An additional hourly service will run all day between Brighton and Hove.

Uckfield to London Bridge

Weekdays

Additional services will run to increase frequency to hourly throughout the middle of the day.

Watford Junction to East Croydon

Weekdays

The weekday service between Hemel Hempstead / Watford Junction and Clapham Junction will be extended through to East Croydon, providing additional services at Balham, Streatham Common, Norbury, Thornton Heath, Selhurst and East Croydon.

London Victoria to East Grinstead

Weekdays

An additional service will run as 19:20 London Victoria to East Grinstead

London Bridge to London Victoria and London Bridge to East Croydon (all stations)

Seven days per week

Two trains per hour will run between London Bridge and London Victoria calling at New Cross Gate, Brockley, Honor Oak Park, Forest Hill, Sydenham, Crystal Palace, Gipsy Hill, West Norwood, Streatham Hill, Balham, Wandsworth Common, Clapham Junction and Battersea Park as eight and ten carriage services. This is to introduce “orbital” services and to increase the frequency of services to and from London Victoria at stations such as Gipsy Hill, West Norwood and Streatham Hill.

However, as part of this change, the London Bridge to East Croydon all-stations service, which overlaps with this service between London Bridge and Sydenham, will no longer run. To maintain connections for stations such as Sydenham with East Croydon, the Caterham to London Bridge services will call additionally at Norwood Junction, providing four trains per hour between Norwood Junction and East Croydon, to connect with London Overground services.

In addition, because of the overlap in the London Victoria to Crystal Palace section, the London Victoria to West Croydon service will not run after approximately 20:00 on weekdays and Saturdays, or on Sundays. Alternative frequent TfL buses operate between Crystal Palace and Norwood Junction.

London Bridge to Caterham via Tulse Hill

Weekdays and Saturdays

The half-hourly London Bridge to Caterham via Tulse Hill service will reduce to run in the London Bridge to East Croydon via Tulse Hill section only.

This is because between East Croydon and Caterham the service overlaps with the fast Caterham to London Bridge service.

This means that the frequency at stations including Caterham, Whyteleafe South, Whyteleafe and Kenley will be two trains per hour to East Croydon and London Bridge, with customers to change at East Croydon for stations towards Tulse Hill.

Anerley and Penge West will not be served by Southern services with customers to connect via London Overground at Norwood Junction for services towards East Croydon.

London Bridge to Caterham and Purley (fast)

Weekdays and Saturdays

Trains between Caterham / Tattenham Corner and London Bridge will call additionally at Norwood Junction to improve connections with London Overground services.

Sundays

Train services between Caterham and London Bridge will continue to run every 30 minutes but will now run fast between Norwood Junction and London Bridge offering faster journey times.

The frequency of the Tattenham Corner to Purley service will reduce from two to one train per hour in each direction. Passengers travelling beyond Purley will be able to connect with train services towards London Bridge or London Victoria at Purley.

Beckenham Junction to London Bridge via Tulse Hill

Weekdays

The frequency of trains between Beckenham Junction and London Bridge will increase to half-hourly between 06:43 and 21:13 towards London Bridge, and 05:56 and 20:14 towards Beckenham Junction.

Sundays

Services between Crystal Palace and London Bridge via Tulse Hill will not run.

Epsom to London Victoria via Carshalton

Seven days per week

During peak hours on weekdays, four services per hour will run between Epsom and London Victoria via Carshalton as today.

On weekdays during off-peak hours, and on Saturdays and Sundays, two services per hour will run between Epsom and London Victoria via Carshalton.

Sutton to London Victoria via West Croydon

Sundays

As on weekdays off-peak and Saturdays, a two-trains-per-hour service will run between Sutton and London Victoria via West Croydon on Sundays.

Gatwick Express

No changes.
