Press release -
Great Northern, Southern and Thameslink services affected by Tube strike
Strikes on the London Underground next week will mean some stations served by Great Northern, Southern and Thameslink will be shut – and train times altered.
Passengers have been told to plan ahead and expect trains to be much busier than usual.
Industrial action is set to take place on the Tube and DLR between Sunday 7 September and Thursday 11 September.
The affected stations are:
- Farringdon (Thameslink)
- Moorgate (Great Northern)
- Old Street (Great Northern)
- Essex Road (Great Northern)
- Highbury and Islington (Great Northern)
- Drayton Park (Great Northern)
- Wembley Central (Southern)
- Harrow and Wealdstone (Southern)
London Underground station staff will not be available to open some of these stations at certain times on some days, meaning passengers will not be able to enter or exit (see details below) and trains will not call there.
On Sunday, 7 September, the Thameslink route between London Bridge and St Pancras International will also be shut for long-planned engineering work.
This has been scheduled for many months and means northbound Thameslink services will start from East Midlands platforms upstairs at St Pancras, and King’s Cross, while southbound services start from London Bridge.
After 6pm, there will be no cross-Thames rail journeys through central London due to the TfL action affecting Tube services. Passengers are being asked to travel earlier in the day if possible. National Rail tickets can be used on London buses and alternative London Overground routes to cross central London.
On weekdays (8-11 September), there will be no service on the Northern City Line at Drayton Park, Highbury and Islington, Essex Road, Old Street and Moorgate until 7.30am. Until this time, trains will divert into King’s Cross or terminate at Finsbury Park.
On Monday and Wednesday, trains will also not run on the line after 10.30pm and Old Street will be closed all day.
Farringdon station will be closed to Thameslink trains until 7.30am every day, and after 10.30pm on Monday and Wednesday.
On Southern’s West London Line, on Monday and Wednesday Wembley Central and Harrow and Wealdstone stations will not open until 7:30am and will be closed from 8pm, and on Tuesday and Thursday morning these stations will not open until8.30am.
Train timetable experts have been working hard to alter services and drivers’ schedules so a train service can still run despite the planned disruption.
These plans take at least 48 hours to finalise and, if strikes are called off – it will take time for to return the service to normal.
It is important people plan their journeys before travelling, and check every day – as services could change at short notice.
Jenny Saunders, Thameslink and Great Northern's customer service director said: “Next week, we’re expecting our trains to be much busier than normal owing to Tube strikes in London. It’ll mean services may not call at their usual stations or could be diverted to run elsewhere.
“My advice to anybody planning to travel in, into, or through London next week is to plan ahead of time, and check again before travelling, as information might change at short notice.”
