GTR contributes £3.2 billion to the UK economy and supports 40,000 jobs, new report finds

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) delivered a £3.2 billion contribution to the UK economy in 2025, supporting 40,000 jobs, according to a new report by Oxford Economics.

Govia Thameslink Railway is part of the Go-Ahead Group, one of the UK’s largest public transport operators, and the Group contributed £6.4 billion to the UK economy in 2025 and supported 86,900 jobs across the UK, operating bus and rail services that play a vital role in keeping communities connected across the country.

Delivering nearly one in five passenger journeys in the UK, GTR manages 236 stations and serves 327 in London and the South East of England, including the Thameslink, Southern, Great Northern, and Gatwick Express routes.

Activities aimed at boosting inclusion within GTR programmes encompass its Women’s Network group, focused on introducing new initiatives to the business such as a mentoring network and talent attraction. The company also has an LGBTQ+ network, ensuring the diversity in its workforce is reflected across the business.

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) operates Thameslink, Great Northern, Southern and Gatwick Express services as follows:

  • Thameslink – cross-London services between Bedford/Peterborough/Cambridge and Brighton/Horsham/East Grinstead, and between Luton/St Albans and Sutton/Wimbledon/Rainham; plus services between London and Sevenoaks
  • Great Northern – services between London and Welwyn, Hertford, Peterborough, Cambridge and King’s Lynn
  • Southern – services between London and the Sussex coast (Brighton, Worthing, Eastbourne, Bognor Regis, Hastings) and parts of Surrey, Kent and Hampshire (Ashford International, Southampton, Portsmouth)
