Stevenage FC and its Academy youth players have adopted Stevenage railway station as part of their ongoing partnership with Thameslink and Great Northern.
A plaque was unveiled by MP Kevin Bonavia on platform 5 in a ceremony held at the station on Saturday, 28 February, ahead of the Boro’s big win (2-1) against Stockport in a match sponsored by the rail company.
Junior Under-12s handed out artwork and safety posters at the station they had designed to passing passengers and arriving fans at the station. In the future the youngsters will help plant up flowers in the station in the club colours.
Tracy Jarvis, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager for Thameslink and Great Northern, said: “We’ve enjoyed a partnership with Stevenage Football Club for 12 years, giving the Academy 16–18-year-old players free travel to and from training and college.
“In the past we’ve teamed up on many campaigns, such as tackling the stigma attached to mental health and collecting toys for disadvantaged youths at Christmas.
“We’re now hoping to take it to a new level, working together for the local community.”
Academy Director Jorden Gibson said: “Thank you to everyone at Thameslink and Great Northern for formally marking our partnership and adoption of Stevenage railway station.
“Over 12 years, this relationship has provided safe, reliable transport for our young players, easing financial pressures and improving access to training and education.
“We’re proud of what we’ve achieved together and look forward to creating even more opportunities for the next generation.”
MP Kevin Bonavia said at the event: "The club is grounded in the community of Stevenage. I hope each and everyone of you is really, really proud of what you do. Congratulations on this partnership and I wish everyone involved all the very best."
Job swap - See it. Score it. Sorted!
To mark the occasion, in a job swap, Under-13 player Riley Phillips recorded an announcement for local commuters to hear across the station Tannoy.
And, in return, ‘Voice of Thameslink and Great Northern’ Matt Streeton cheered on the players at the Lamex Stadium. Matt’s dulcet tones are instantly recognisable from information messages broadcast on Thameslink and Great Northern trains and stations.
Matt ended his announcement to the thousands of fans with a take on the iconic ‘See It. Say It. Sorted.’ security message:
“And remember, if you see an opportunity on the pitch that looks just right, Stevenage players, you know what to do: See It. Score It. Sorted!”
