Work under way to deliver step‑free access at Thameslink's Luton station

Network Rail and Govia Thameslink Railway have issued the following press release:

Network Rail has started work on a project delivering step-free access to all platforms at Thameslink's Luton station.

As part of the Government’s Access for All programme, the station is being upgraded with a new fully accessible footbridge and three lifts.

Currently, only platform 5 has step-free access. The improvements will provide an unobstructed, accessible route from the main entrance and drop off points to all platforms.

This will make the station safer and more convenient for passengers – especially those with reduced mobility, or travelling with items like prams or luggage.

The main construction work is taking place from February to December. The bridge span will be installed in June, followed by the lifts towards the end of 2026. The overall project is planned for completion in spring 2027.

Rail Minister Lord Hendy said: “We’re building a railway that works for everyone and these improvements at Luton station will mean more people can travel independently. Whether it’s commuting to work, accessing education, or visiting loved ones, everyone should be able to travel with confidence.

“With the support of Network Rail and local partners, our Access for All programme is delivering practical changes that make a real difference for passengers.”

Carl Martin, Accessibility Lead at Thameslink, said: “As operators of the station, we are truly delighted to see work under way installing lifts at Luton station. They will make a huge difference for our many passengers.”

Nick Wilton, Network Rail sponsor, said: “Delivering step‑free access at Luton is an important investment in making the station more welcoming and easier for everyone to use.

“The new footbridge and lifts will provide a safe, accessible route to every platform and create a much better experience for passengers, particularly those with reduced mobility or travelling with luggage or prams.

Rachel Hopkins, MP for Luton South and South Bedfordshire, said: “After campaigning for lifts at Luton Station for many years, including numerous discussions with Network Rail and the Department for Transport, I am very pleased that initial works to install lifts at Luton Station are finally now under way.

“This much-needed work will provide long overdue accessibility measures, so all residents in Luton South and South Bedfordshire can utilise the station and travel on our railway without difficulty. Be assured that I will be keeping a close eye on the progress of this long-awaited work.”
