Naples (Italy), 13th March 2018 – Hitachi Rail Italy today announced that it has signed a contract with Metroselskabet, a partnership of the municipality of Copenhagen, the Danish Government and the city of Frederiksberg, for the supply of eight driverless trains for the M1/M2 lines of the Copenhagen Metro. The contract was signed on 7th March and has a value of approximately EUR 50 million.

Hitachi Rail already has a strong presence in the Danish capital. Since 2002, 34 Italian-made metro trains manufactured in Naples, Pistoia and Reggio Calabria have been in revenue service on the M1/M2 lines; an additional 39 trains manufactured for the Cityringen line will enter into service next year. All vehicles are driverless metros.

The eight new metro trains will be delivered by 2020 and will have similar features as the Cityringen vehicles with some necessary adaptations to run on the M1/M2 lines. The trains will have the state-of-the-art technology already developed for the Cityringen vehicles. The internal layoutwill be designed to increase transport capacity, in line with the needs of the service. The signalling and communication systems, which are included in the contract, will be provided by Ansaldo STS.

"The contract signed in Copenhagen - says Maurizio Manfellotto, CEO Hitachi Rail Italy - confirms our company's ability to offer products and services that provide a comfortable, safe and reliable journey for passengers, giving our customers the means to run a smooth revenue service. This in turn allows us to create solid and long-term relationships."

"In our plants - says Giuseppe Marino, COO Hitachi Rail Italy - we manufacture trains that allow us to compete globally: we have great experience in the field, and make important investments in technology R&D that help us to constantly innovate in our production and time to market. All of which are supported by the skills and the expertise of our people."
