Online auction seller sentenced for £320k VAT fraud
A Cottingham man who hid online auction sales worth more than £2.6 million from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has been sentenced.
Daniel Waslin, 35, of South Street, Cottingham, ran two online shops selling remote control golf trolleys and garden furniture imported from China, but declared no sales to HMRC. .
Waslin made more than £2.6 million between 2010 and 2015 from his UK Leisure World and Active Sport and Leisure stores but evaded paying £323,000 in VAT by not registering with HMRC.
Import checks raised suspicions about Waslin’s activities and a full investigation revealed the scale of his crime.
Jo Tyler, Assistant Director, Fraud Investigation Service, HMRC, said:
“Waslin showed utter contempt for the tax system to line his own pockets with money meant for our public services. He thought his online trading would go unnoticed, but he was wrong and now he’s paying the price.
“We will continue working to level the playing field for honest, hardworking businesses to ensure they are not losing out to the tax cheats. We ask anyone with information about tax fraud to contact the HMRC Fraud Hotline on 0800 788 887.”
Waslin admitted VAT evasion and was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for two years, and 250 hours unpaid work at Hull Crown Court today, 10 July 2017.
The £323,000 has been repaid to HMRC.
