Step-by-step VAT guidance helps businesses self-serve online

Since launching on 1 April 2026, HM Revenue and Customs’ (HMRC’s) new interactive VAT guidance tool is making it easier for newly VAT-registered businesses to understand their obligations, use online VAT services with confidence and get their tax right first time.

The tool provides the support businesses need after registering for VAT:

  • Step-by-step guidance
  • Practical examples
  • Short videos.

This gives both newly registered and existing VAT-registered businesses quick, easy access to the information they need without having to call or write to HMRC.

The guidance helps customers understand key VAT responsibilities, navigate online services and make informed decisions, reducing avoidable mistakes and unnecessary contact with HMRC. By directing customers to the quickest and easiest ways to resolve common queries online, HMRC can focus support on customers with more complex needs and those who require extra help.

It supports HMRC's wider Business and Specialist Tax strategy, part of HMRC’s Transformation Roadmap, improving digital services and making tax administration simpler, faster and more accessible for businesses. The tool is one of several measures designed to reduce administrative burdens, increase confidence among businesses and help customers manage their tax affairs more efficiently. Businesses can access ongoing support through the Help with VAT Online Services guidance.
