Rail leaders to share digital solutions for social distancing

Press release   •   Sep 16, 2020 15:02 BST

Major rail operators and cutting-edge innovators will debate how to tackle new demands on the sector in the webinar ‘Digital nudge for social distancing’ on 14 October 2020 at 13:00 CEST. The webinar is the second of the four-part series ‘The power of digital to inspire rail passenger confidence’, produced by the International Railway Summit in association with Swiss Federal Railways (SBB).

Social distancing is central to limiting the spread of COVID-19, and to returning travel back to normality. Operators are seeking fresh ideas to overcome unprecedented challenges.

A comprehensive two-hour debate will explore how digital technologies, such as signage, alerts, information screens, and mobile apps, can gently encourage, or ‘nudge’, passengers to maintain social distancing. How can rail boost confidence in the safety of services whilst minimising disruption?

A senior representative from SBB, and Félix von Pechmann, Director Passenger Information Project, RATP will outline the digital strategies they have implemented over the past months to bring passengers back.

The webinar is sponsored by Industrial IoT experts Advantech and by smart motors, providers of real-time monitoring and data analysis through the SAVANA Digitalization Platform.

Jan Kolář, CEO of Advantech’s co-creation partner Passengera, will talk about the company’s passenger infotainment services, and smart motors CEO Marc Gispert will present their digitalisation solutions, including screens and phone applications which inform passengers of train carriage occupancy in real-time.

The debate, which will include live questions from a global expert audience, will be chaired by Paolo Guglielminetti, Global Rail Leader at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The webinar ‘Digital nudge for social distancing’ is free to attend. To register or to find out more please visit .

Part 1 of the series ‘The power of digital to inspire rail passenger confidence’ will be broadcast on 18 September. The session ‘Providing a healthy environment for rail passengers’ will seespeakers debate how to directly foster a healthy environment; from health scans to ventilation, from sanitisation to automated cleaning.

The IRS Rail Webinar series builds on the network, knowledge, and trust established over 9 International Railway Summit events. Throughout the series influential policymakers, key operators and infrastructure owners, and pioneering suppliers and innovators will share their experience and best practice. IRS Rail Webinars are designed to help the railway sector stay informed and stay connected. At this difficult time communication is more important than ever.

The International Railway Summit is a meeting of senior executives representing the world’s key rail operators, rail infrastructure management companies, national and local governments, rolling stock manufacturers and a wide range of solution providers.

International Railway Summit provides a 'matchmaking' service between rail industry leaders ('buyers') and technical experts, based on buyer delegates' project requirements and the proven expertise of large and small suppliers that we have carefully handpicked. Based on this matchmaking, buyer delegates attend one-to-one consultation sessions with suitable suppliers during the annual summit.

In addition to the one-to-one meetings, delegates also attend a conference programme given by key industry leaders and experts and network over lunches and dinners with their counterparts and industry colleagues from all over the world. The International Railway Summit is hosted by IRITS Events. The 10th International Railway Summit will take place on 24-26 February 2021 in Berlin, Germany.
